Everything you need to know before your first visit to TBay Smiles Orthodontics in Thunder Bay.
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist in Thunder Bay?
No. A referral is never required at TBay Smiles Orthodontics. Book a consultation directly by calling 807-577-6453. Many patients are referred by their dentist, but anyone can come in on their own.
How much does a consultation cost, and what happens at the first visit?
New patient consultations are completely free. At your first visit, a team member reviews your medical and dental history, discusses your chief concerns, and takes photos, x-rays, and digital scans, all in office. Dr. McFarlane then reviews everything personally and gets back to you with his assessment, usually within 24 hours.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Bring your completed medical and dental history form (emailed to you when you book), your insurance information, and any existing x-rays if you have them. Same-day and walk-in consultations are sometimes available if time allows.
What age should my child first see an orthodontist?
Age 7, or sooner if there's a habit like thumb-sucking. Early interceptive treatment (typically ages 6–10) can head off serious problems later. A common example is expanding a narrow upper jaw, which makes room for adult teeth, opens the airway, and gives kids an early confidence boost.
Do you offer clear aligners?
Yes. TBay Smiles offers ClearCorrect clear aligners for teens and adults, and Dr. McFarlane holds the highest level of certification in clear aligner treatment. Remote monitoring is also available: a scan box connects to your phone so Dr. McFarlane can track your progress from home, reducing in-office visits to as little as every 6 months.
What types of braces do you offer?
Metal and ceramic braces, plus every colour of the rainbow for kids who want to show some personality. Dr. McFarlane has been placing braces for children, teens, and adults since 1992.
How much do braces or clear aligners cost in Thunder Bay?
Treatment at TBay Smiles typically ranges from $3,000 to $8,000 CAD depending on your case. Interest-free payment plans are available, generally spread over 15 months. All insurance plans are accepted, including Sun Life, Canada Life, and Blue Cross, and there are never surprise fees.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Most treatments take about 18 months for both braces and clear aligners. Early treatment on baby teeth usually takes around 12 months, while complex cases involving impacted teeth or jaw surgery can take up to 24 months.
How often will I need appointments during treatment?
With braces, adjustments are usually every two months. With clear aligners, every three months, or as little as every six months with remote monitoring. Orthodontics has come a long way; no more monthly visits.
Do you treat TMJ and jaw pain?
Yes. Diagnosis includes a physical and radiographic examination, all done in office. Treatment options include myofunctional therapy, orthodontics, and therapeutic Botox for muscle spasm, clenching, and grinding (Botox is offered to adults only). Many local dentists refer their TMJ cases to Dr. McFarlane.
What do I do if a wire is poking or a bracket breaks?
Use the orthodontic wax from your start kit as a buffer against your cheek until you can be seen. If a bracket breaks, save it, don't throw it out, and if it's still on the wire, leave it there. Call 807-577-6453 or text 807-770-1567 and we'll get you in.
What happens after my braces or aligners come off?
We favour removable retainers: they hold teeth beautifully, come out for cleaning, and even double as clenching guards and whitening trays. A full year of follow-up (check-ins at 3, 6, and 9 months) is included in your original fee. We also appreciate 24 hours notice for cancellations, though there's currently no cancellation fee. Life happens.
